Biography
  • Born on May 5, 1818 in Trier Germany
  • Middle-class, family converted to Protestant religion to escape anti-Semitism
  • Attended the Univeristy of Berlin. studied law and philosophy.
  • attemded socialist meetings
  • scared of arrest, he and future wife moved to Paris
  • wrote about terrible conditions of working class
  • moved around more, eventually returned to Brussels
  • Wrote The Communist Manifesto, plan of rebellion against government (1848)
  • exhiled from Germany
  • Spent most of his life in exile because he was wanted by the Prussian police.
  • Died March 14, 1883 in North London
  • People listened to theories in Communist Manifesto and Russian revolution began

Parallels
  • Karl Marx - disagreed with capitalism's idea of minority of people holding the majority of power
  • Old Major - "The rest [chickens eggs] have all gone to the market to bring in the money for Jones and his men"(29). -animals only live to serve the higher power, Mr. Jones
  • Karl Marx believed everyone should receive equal amounts of goods
  • Old Major - "all animals are equal"(32).
  • Bolsheviks revolted after Karl Marx death, never got to see the communist revolution he created.
  • Animals took over Mr. Jones farm and started Animalism after Old Major spoke about his dream and died shortly after.
  • "...they saw clearly that it was their duty to prepare for [the rebellion]"(35).
